This annual event (since 1998) has established McKinney as the home of the premiere student piano competition of North Texas. Accomplished pianists age 14-18 from across the state submit a video recording along with an application which is evaluated by a panel of judges. Up to ten finalists are selected to come to McKinney for a weekend during the month of April to participate in the competition and instruction from our special guest artist. What makes this Piano Competition Different: The guest artist performs a solo concert on Friday evening, followed by the competition on Saturday morning. Each student performs a 20-minute memorized program. After lunch, the students return for a master class conducted by the guest artist. The master class is divided into 2 sessions: Saturday afternoon and Sunday afternoon.  A final recital immediately follows the final master class on Sunday, all of the students receive instruction for 30 minutes in front of their peers, allowing them to listen to and learn from each other.  Each student performs one piece from his/her competition program. All events are held at the Heard-Craig Performance Hall. At the conclusion of the recital, four grand-prize winners are announced and presented with checks for $1,000. The other competitors each receive $300 and the opportunity to return and compete again. Many of these students choose to major in music in college and use their winnings as scholarship money.
